Latino's in the Netherlands

There are approximately 84,000 Latin American immigrants in the Netherlands. These Latinos often emigrate to the Netherlands for work or relationships. This migration flow often goes unnoticed because Latinos are not a major focus group. This may seem positive, but because little attention is given to them, Latinos and their needs are often overlooked in the development of migration policies. In their attempt to integrate into Dutch society, Latinos encounter language barriers, cultural differences, prejudice, and a lack of information.

The Science Shop for Language, Culture & Communication came into contact with Margarita González Saavedra. Margarita is a societal entrepreneur and has personal experience with the situation, having once migrated from Latin America to the Netherlands herself. As a result, she is committed to promoting the participation, integration, and well-being of Latinos and other vulnerable groups in disadvantaged positions. Margarita is working with the University of Groningen (RUG) to research the challenges surrounding the integration of Latin Americans in the Netherlands. This collaboration was established through the Science Shop for Language, Culture & Communication.
