How do you measure loss of blood during a bath birth?

Bath births have become more popular in recent years. The water has a relaxing and analgesic effect, improves blood circulation and makes it easier to move.

However, there are also disadvantages to a bath birth. Too much blood loss can lead to shock and anemia. If a woman in labor loses more than one liter of blood, action must be taken. However, it is difficult for obstetricians to estimate how much blood a woman in labor loses in the bath. There is not yet a measuring instrument to measure this blood loss. That is why Angeliek Visser and Roxane Liewes knocked on the door of the Science Shops!

Student Thiadmar van der Wal researched the problem from a technical point of view. However, the researched methods for measuring blood in a delivery bath entailed many limitations to finalise the research. That is why four students of Medicine are now looking into it:
