Innovation Lab Geo 15 November: Making sense of a changing world
Date: Tuesday 15 November 2022
Time: 13:00-17:00
Location: Energy Academy Europe, room 5158.0261, Nijenborgh 6, Groningen

Are you keen to move forward and make a change? Do you want to be brought up to speed on the state-of-art technologies on the intersection of Geospatial analytics and AI the University is using and meet like minded people? Are you looking for funding to realize innovative ideas with fellow scientists and technologists?
We cordially invite you to the Innovation Lab organized by the Center for Information Technology to meet like minded colleagues and work together on ideas for proposals for the ICT Innovation Fund!
Program
- 13:00 - 13:15 | Walk in
- 13:15 - 13.45 | Welcome, goals for the day, ICT Innovation Fund introduction
- 13:45 - 14:15 | Novel techniques to determine vegetation structure. Will they scale?
Han Olff - Professor of Community and Conservation Ecology, Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), University of Groningen - 14:15 - 14:45 | Using AIS tracking to connect marine recreational behavior to ecologically sensitive areas
Erik Meijles - Director of Education and Associate Professor Landscape Geography, University of Groningen - 14:45 - 15:30 | Risk and benefits of using named entity recognition to geocode location mentions in natural texts
Herbert Kruitbosch - Scientific programmer, team Data Science, Center for Information Technology, University of Groningen - 15:15 - 15:30 | Break
- 15:30 - 16:30 | Discussions in groups on applications
- 16:30 - 17:00 | Wrap up
- 17:00 - ..........| Drinks and bites

The world is changing. In many research fields, interpreting these changes is a crucial aspect of research:
- Ecologists monitor changing vegetation with machine learned models interpreting colors in aerial images
- Computer scientists develop elegant algorithms to detect hidden patterns in large datasets
- Economists and spatial scientists discover new trends in urban developments through advanced statistic analysis
How can we learn from one another? Can we reuse these tools, concepts and knowledge? Can we extend our expertise and fuse it with other research fields? How can we scale our technology to make a difference?
We need you, we need your minds and ideas for such discussions on the 15th of November!
