Celebration for three FSE staff members

Three staff members of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (formerly known as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) had something to celebrate recently.

Jan Willem Veening (Microbiology, Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute ) is one of 23 new EMBO Young Investigators. He joins a select network of European top scientists in the Life Sciences. Veening is the only Dutch scientist to be elected this year.

Adri Minnaard (bio-organic chemistry, Stratingh Institute for Chemistry) is part of a consortium which received a $3.5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a new tuberculosis vaccine. Minnaard will employ four postdocs over the next one and a half year on this project.

Gerrit Jan Poelarends (Applied microbiology, Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy ) received a KIEM grant from the Dutch funding agency NWO, to develop a new method to produce vital amino acids that may be used to treat brain disease. This is done in collaboration with the Groningen company Integrex Research.
