Exhibition competition for Dutch schools
In academic year 2015-2016, various schools in the Netherlands participated in the IRRESISTIBLE project.
Most chose the module ‘Carbohydrates in Breast Milk’. At the end of the module, which was delivered in their biology and chemistry lessons, the pupils staged an exhibition on what they had learned. Many of them used the EXPOneer system, which has been used frequently in this project.
Four schools sent us their best exhibits for our exhibition of the schools’ work. This was part of a larger exhibition on Energy Transition at a big church in the centre of Groningen, the Der Aa-kerk). The church was the venue for the Science LinX Research Days for secondary-school pupils and the Night of Arts and Sciences for the general public, both of which took place in the first week of June 2016. The pupils visiting the Research Days were asked to vote for their favourite exhibit, and almost 300 of them did so. A further 2000 people visited the IRRESISTIBLE exhibition at the Night of Arts and Sciences.
In the end, the Mammae game won the popular vote. This game, by pupils from Lindecollege in Wolvega, is a fun way to learn about the topic covered in the module. The pupils bought a second-hand board game and changed all of the texts and some of the images on the cards to reflect the module’s theme.
The prize for the game’s makers and their biology and chemistry teacher is a trip to the closing conference of IRRESISTIBLE, which takes place in Kiel from 28 September to 1 October. During the conference, there will be an exhibition featuring contributions from all the participating countries. The exhibition will be open to the general public on the European Researchers Night on Friday 30 September.
