Electronic states with unusual properties can be promoted at interfaces between transition metal oxides. We discuss transport experiments that provide evidence for Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling resulting from inversion symmetry breaking at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces. We show that the combination of spin-orbit coupling and scattering from finite-range impurities can explain the observed magnitude of the negative magnetoresistance, as well as the temperature and electron density dependence. We also discuss transport experiments on SrTiO3/SrIrO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures revealing a metal insulator transition and unusual magnetotransport properties.
