Jan Rieck Receives an APL Materials Excellence in Research Award!

24 November 2021

Jan Rieck has received an APL Materials Excellence in Research Award for his publication on SrTiO3-based memristive devices. The research was performed during his Master research at the Peter Grünberg Institute (Forschungszentrum Juelich, Germany) under the supervision of Prof. Regina Dittmann. CogniGron is congratulating Jan for this achievement and is happy to have him now working on his PhD at the University of Groningen.

The publication of Jan that received the award is titled "Trade-off between variability and retention of memristive epitaxial SrTiO3 devices" and presents a study on on SrTiO3 -based memristive devices. The publication gave valuable insights for the application of memristive SrTiO3 devices as non-volatile memory or in neural networks. A study that is also very relevant for CogniGron.

Jan is currently a PhD student within the Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN Programme MANIC (Materials for Neuromorphic Circuits) at the University of Groningen. Jan was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1993. His academic career began in 2012, when he started his bachelor course in Physics at the RWTH Aachen University. Due to his strong interest in material physics he investigated the electrical transport in sputtered thin silver films for insulated glazing during his bachelor project. After that, he started the master course in Physics at the RWTH with the track of study of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics. He completed his master project at the Peter-Grünberg-Institute 7 of the Forschungszentrum Jülich, in which he investigated the variability of SrTiO3 based ReRAM devices. Since this first contact with neuromorphic computing left a long-lasting excitement, he applied for the MANIC program and was accepted as a PhD at the University of Groningen, where he now investigates memristive properties as well as the network behavior of ferroelastic domain walls.
