Van Leeuwenhoek Award for antibiotics research
At the 2024 spring meeting of the KNVM & NVMM in Papendal, Adela Melcrova was presented with the Van Leeuwenhoek award. This prize for a young post-doc (less than 5 years after the PhD) is awarded for the best publication in the past year. Melcrova worked as a post-doc in the lab of Prof. Wouter Roos conducting research at the Zernike Institute into the effect of antibiotics. For this she used a very fast scanning microscope, a so-called high-speed atomic force microscope. In combination with other techniques and in collaboration with colleagues in Groningen and abroad, she has described a new mechanism of action of antibiotics. The work was published in the journal Nature Communications in summer 2023.
