Spintronics/ Spin Caloritronics pioneer Gerrit Bauer is Zernike Chair 2016

Gerrit Bauer, professor of Theoretical Physics at the Institute for Materials Research at Tohoku University (Sendai, Japan) and (part-time) at the TU Delft has accepted the prestigious Zernike Chair. Bauer is a pioneer in the theory of spintronics and spin caloritronics and has inspired world-wide theoretical and experimental studies.

Gerrit Bauer was born in Gronau (Germany). He studied Chemical Engineering in Twente and received his PhD from the Department of Physics at the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany). After a Postdoc at the Institute for Solid State Physics (University of Tokyo, Japan) he became member of Scientific Staff at Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium (Eindhoven, NL) in 1986. In 1992 Bauer was appointed as Professor of Theoretical Physics at TU Delft and in 2011 as Professor of Theoretical Physics at Tohoku University, where he is currently residing.

Bauer has published ~300 scientific publications, mainly on spintronics, spin caloritronics, and nanomagnetism. Among other organizational tasks he was board member of FOM (1996-2005), divisional associate editor of Physical Review Letters (2001-2007), coordinator of the IST-STREP project financed by the European Commission 2006-2010, and chairman of the Gordon Research Conference on “Spin Dynamics in Nanostructures” (2015) and ERC panels in 2014 and 2016, to mention just a few steps of his career.

Prof. Bauer received several awards and fellowships. He was Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung (1984-1986), Postdoctoral Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (1984-1986), received the Wilhelm-Conrad-Röntgen Award (2000; Universität Würzburg, Germany), the Outstanding Referee Award by the American Physical Society (2008), the Lars Onsager Medal of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (2009; Trondheim, Norway). He is Fellow of the American Physical Society (2010), was IEEE Distinguished Lecturer of the Magnetics Society (2012) and F.C. Donders Chair (2015; University of Utrecht, NL).
