Prof. Bert Meijer from the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) at the Eindhoven University of Technology has accepted the prestigious Zernike Chair.

Bert Meijer was born and studied in Groningen and received his PhD with the late professor Hans Wynberg in 1982. He started his career as research chemist in the field of functional organic materials, including conducting polymers, at Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. He moved on as head of the department "New Materials" at DSM Research in Geleen. In 1991, Bert Meijer started as professor in Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In 2002 he was appointed also as professor in the newly established Department of Biomedical Engineering in Eindhoven. From 2004, he is appointed as Distinguished University Professor of Molecular Sciences at his University. Since many years he is an adjunct professor in Nijmegen and Santa Barbara. More than seventy students from his group received their PhD degree. Since 2008 Bert Meijer is Scientific Director of the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (TU/e). Bert Meijer has received many prestigious prices among which the 2001 SPINOZA-Award of the Dutch Science Foundation NWO and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science Professorship in 2014.

Bert Meijer will spend several weeks in Groningen (starting in August). During this time he will give a Masterclass “Functional Molecular Materials” open to TopMaster students Nanoscience, PhD students and interested Postdocs. Further, he will give the Zernike Chair lecture at the Zernike campus and a public lecture for a lay audience. All events will be announced separately. Above that, Bert Meijer is looking forward to meet the staff of the Zernike Institute National Research Centre for many fruitful discussions.
