Title: Calculating and observing the shadow of a black hole

Abstract:
In April 2019 the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration presented an image of the shadow of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy M87. In this talk I discuss how the shadow of a Schwarzschild or Kerr black hole comes about, how its boundary curve can be analytically calculated, and how the image of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration was actually produced.
