Infrastructure & Transport

Infrastructure and Transport create positive and negative impacts that affect fundamental interests (such as welfare, health and property) at different geographical scales, which call for careful planning and management. Transport infrastructure is faced fundamental challenges such as ageing infrastructure, climate change, environmental pressures, social inclusiveness and more in general the need for sustainable approaches. All which call for fundamental and practice-oriented research. Our specialities include: integrated planning of transport infrastructure and (so-called area-oriented planning); planning for ageing infrastructures (renewal); interfaces between transport and other networks (e.g. energy, water); interactions between land use, infrastructure and logistics (on hubs and networks); perceptions and accessibility of vulnerable groups and areas (rural); smart transport innovations and their perception; new, adaptive governance and institutional arrangements in transport and infrastructure planning; collaboration between governmental parties, market parties and civic society (public-private-people partnerships). Involving geographers, demographers and planners, a central theme is the interaction between transformation of physical networks and interdependent institutions. An important and long-standing collaboration is with the Dutch Department of Water management and Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat) in the programme Sustainable Networks (Duurzame Netwerken).
