Governance & Civic Initiatives
What kind of places do we want in the future? We all have a sense of place, but civic needs for security, identity, prosperity and well-being differ between individuals and groups. Sustainability challenges impact people and places in various ways. We see a recent rise of active citizenship, also termed as grassroots innovation, transformative agency and collective action, wanting to take matters in their own hands. This can be explained by a renewed interest in community, place and local identity, the erosion of the welfare state and the privatization of public services. Active citizenship has consequences for the role of governance, to enable these initiatives, while collaborating in new networks, coalitions and arrangements.
