New UGP publication: Beyond the Map

How were non-European regions portrayed in early modern maps? And what can we learn from these historical descriptions today?
The book Beyond the Map: Descriptions of the non-European World in Joan Blaeu’s Atlas Maior is now available online and open access at University of Groningen Press (UGP).
Edited by Jeroen Bos, this bilingual and interactive book is the result of a student-led project from the Faculty of Arts seminar Beyond the Map.
During the seminar, history students critically analysed texts describing twenty non-European regions in Blaeu’s renowned Atlas Maior. Their insights, compiled in essays, are featured in this book and were also incorporated into a digital exhibition by the UB Special Collections.
