Research tools
In order to conduct research, researchers need a good computer and modern IT facilities. The IT facilities at the UG will help you to work faster and more efficiently. There are also IT departments that can provide support in finding innovative IT solutions for your research project.
Computer facilities
Computer facilities at the UG are essential if you are to perform your tasks as a researcher. Make sure that you have access to all of the IT facilities that you need, and that you know where to go for support.
Research & Innovation Support (RIS)
If you need specific computer facilities for your research, please contact the Research & Innovation Support (RIS) department. They can help you with high performance computing (HPC), the automation of data processing and analysis (data science), Virtual and Augmented Reality, and 3D and geographical data-analysis (geoscience). On top of providing access to IT facilities, they can also provide specialist user support.

IT research facilities
Researchers sometimes have specific requirements regarding IT hardware or software. The demand manager makes an inventory of these requirements per faculty.
Demand managers
Demand managers work for the faculties as IT policy officers, translating the requirements of researchers for internal and external IT suppliers. They are in close contact with the CIT. If you have any questions or wish to discuss your requirements, please contact the demand manager of your faculty.

Software
A lot of standard software is available to researchers at the UG. But you may sometimes need more specific software that is not generally available in your environment. If so, try to find out whether the UG offers the software. If it is available, you can download the software and add it to your environment. If not, contact your demand manager and ask about the possibilities.

Software overview
The software overview shows which software packages are available within the UG.
Requesting and downloading software
You can request and download software through IRIS, the CIT’s self-service portal.

Storing, processing, and sending data securely
Before you save your research data, ask yourself the following questions: How big will my dataset be when I’ve completed my research? Who will be working on the data with me? How confidential is my data? How can I ensure that I don’t lose my data? Which technical options does the UG provide for storing data securely? You will find the answers to these questions on the page of the Digital Competence Center, where you will also find more information about processing and sending data securely. Please remember that procedures may differ per faculty, so contact the privacy & security coordinator of your Faculty.
