In “Humane AI” we study the social implications of the interaction between humans and new technologies, with specific attention to language-based technologies, which continuously foster innovation in human-human and human-machine interaction. Specifically, we look at strengthening our expertise in Natural Language Processing for the social good, accounting for ethical and societal aspects. We do this not only at end-user level, but also at model/tool development stage - possibly exploring a variety of human-in-the-loop strategies. This also relates to the larger societal picture where a digital and global public space is emerging, which raises the question of how all citizens can participate in a digital society (digital literacy and inclusion) ensuring all groups are actively represented, and how culture plays or can play a role in connecting those citizens.

Topics we work on:

Social and ethical aspects in NLP | Human-in-the-loop in language technology development | Cognitive aspects and alignment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) | Natural Language Processing for lesser represented languages and communities | Language technology for the social good | Explainable AI and public values | Digital platforms, algorithms and informed citizenship | Computational analysis of information flows and online discourses | Artificial intelligence for multimodal media | Emerging technologies and global governance
