Paul Krijnen is een externe PHD-kandidaat aan de Graduate School of Humanities met als promotor Joop W. Koopmans en co-promotor Leonieke Vermeer. Zijn onderzoek betreft: ‘Leven en werk van de patriot en Bataaf Pieter Ondaatje (1758-1818): Een gedreven politieke radicaal tijdens de politiek-staatkundige transitie van Nederland rond 1800’. Een van de meest intrigerende politici gedurende de periode 1780-1800 was Pieter Philip Juriaan Ondaatje, die na de dood van zijn grootvader Pieter Quint in 1791 zijn achternaam wijzigde in Quint Ondaatje. Zijn geprononceerde radicale gedachtegoed dat zich in de loop van de jaren onder invloed van ingrijpende gebeurtenissen in Nederland en Frankrijk verder ontwikkelde, zette hij neer in zowel politieke en militaire activiteiten als redevoeringen en geschriften. Geboren op Ceylon (tegenwoordig Sri Lanka) uit een Amsterdamse moeder en Ceylonese vader was hij de belichaming van de relaties tussen het ‘moederland’ en de kolonie Ceylon. Kernvragen van dit onderzoek zijn: wat was de invloed van zijn (migratie-)achtergrond op zijn politieke denken en handelen en wat was precies zijn bijdrage aan de democratisering en vernieuwing van de staatsinrichting van Nederland in de periode 1780-1800? Het tijdvak van de Atlantische Revoluties, patriots radicalisme, politiek radicalisme in de Bataafse Republiek, geschiedenis van de politieke theorie, politieke cultuur, geschiedenis van de pers, wederkerigheid in koloniale relaties. | ||
