Department of Neuroscience

The mission of the Department of Neuroscience is to visualize, dissect and manipulate central nervous system (CNS) biology in healthy ageing and diseases. The department aims for excellence in research, education and training.

In the context of the university theme healthy ageing, the interrelated fields of interest are neuroimaging of the cognitive function, neurophysiology and neuroimmunology. CNS ageing and inflammatory neurodegeneration are central topics of interest, and diseases studied as models for tissue degeneration include Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s.

The research in the department is supported by the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), the University of Groningen, and a wide array of scientific and charity foundations, including the European Research Council (ERC), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NOW, currently one VENI and two VIDI programmes), Deltaplan Dementia, and the Dutch MS Research Foundation. Some projects are also performed in collaboration with biomedical and nutritional industries.

The department is organized into four sections: Anatomy, Medical Physiology, Cognitive Neuropsychology, and Neuroimaging Centre (NiC, a general facility)
