Research Kapteyn Institute Kapteyn Mobile Planetarium

Educational programme

Via digital projection on the inflatable dome, we explore the night sky, planets, stars, and galaxies together with the children. We use modern astronomical images and video material. More information on suitable teaching material can be found under teaching materials.

Planetarium capacity and space requirements

The capacity of the mobile planetarium is limited: a maximum of 25 adults or 30 children accompanied by a teacher can simultaneously attend a presentation in the inflatable dome.

The planetarium should be placed in a room of at least 7x7 metres and 3.5 metres high, with an electrical outlet within 20 metres. Because of the planetarium's thin walls, it is important that it can be placed in a quiet room. A gym or playroom, for example, is ideal.

The day programme

You can compile a suitable schedule for the day yourself. The possible start time of the first presentation depends on your location and the travel time from Groningen.

Keep in mind that about six presentations can be given on a day. Presentations for primary school children (groups 1-4, ages 4-8) last 20-30 minutes. Presentations for upper primary school children (groups 5-8, ages 8-12), secondary schools, and general audiences last 30-45 minutes.

At least 10 minutes of changeover time should be scheduled between presentations, plus one or two breaks for the staff member.

Costs and booking

Primary schools can book the planetarium for €435 per day incl. VAT. For secondary schools, the rate is €490 per day incl. VAT. The planetarium is also available for events outside education. This price is on request.

For bookings, please visit the online booking form.
