About the DOT Live Planetarium
In 2014, a brand new building opened in the heart of Groningen: a 20-metre-wide planetarium theatre with a striking appearance, known at the time as ‘Infoversum’. Since 2016, it has been known as DOT, with a bar and restaurant on the ground floor run by Bos&Bos catering. The planetarium has been back in operation since autumn 2017, hosting planetarium shows, conferences and events under the name DOT live planetarium.
Since 2019, the restaurant has been run by Vermaat and the University of Groningen organises shows, conferences and events in the planetarium.
Visualizing data
The DOT live planetarium is a place for the university to visualize data, mainly astronomical for now but in the future also medical, for example. This can be used to advance research, including by detecting errors in machine learning when the data is visualized.
Events
DOT is also a venue for events. These events, both public and private, are designed to promote research and outreach in the northern Netherlands.
Planetarium shows are held weekly. Annual events include Eurosonic, music shows, the Weekend of Science, Let's Gro, Information Universe, Big Data events, Target Field Lab, and several other major conferences.
All this is done with the help of expertise from the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute in the form of astronomers, operators, volunteers and managers, and from the Centre for Information Technology (CIT) in the form of technicians and system administrators.
