"Social media and the redistribution of power" awarded NWO Internationalisation grant

05 November 2018

As the PI of Social Media and the Redistribution of Power: Journalism, Politics and Citizenship , Marcel Broersma has been awarded an NWO internationalisation grant. The aim of this NWO programme is to facilitate collaboration between Dutch humanities researchers and their foreign colleagues, and to strengthen the formation of international networks.

The project explores the shifting power dynamics between journalists, politicians and citizens on social media. Based on empirical research into social media use practices of these agents in the triangle of political communication, it theorizes how the redistribution of power in this decentralized and networked informational ecology effects democracy.

This NWO grant facilitates a continued close collaboration between media and communication scholars from the universities of Groningen, Oslo, Vienna, and Antwerp.
