NWO awards KIEM grant to Marcel Broersma and Anna van Cauwenberge, Research Project "Growing up with Media"
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded Prof. Dr Marcel Broersma and Dr Anna van Cauwenberge a KIEM grant for the implementation of their research project "Growing up with media: Digital literacy and media literacy in children."
Growing Children and Media
Media play an increasingly central role in the lives of growing children. Childcare providers, schools, and parents wonder what the consequences are and struggle with the question of how to deal with smartphones, social media, and gaming. Companies from the creative industry need knowledge that helps them to respond to this development in a responsible manner.
This project investigates the individual, social, and technological factors that determine how children develop digital literacy and media literacy. By taking the experience of the child as a starting point, this project offers a new perspective that provides insight into how children themselves build up an understanding of digital media and how they give meaning to the world around them.
KIEM
The Creative Industries - KIEM program is aimed at financing short-term fundamental and industrial research. The program aims to stimulate the setting up of partnerships between knowledge institutes and private parties, including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With the help of KIEM funding, consortia (consisting of at least one researcher from a knowledge institution and at least one private partner) can set up a longer-term partnership to develop short-term fundamental and industrial research.
