Summary:
The project is a 2nd wave follow-up of an earlier cross sectional study (Biomedical and psychosocial factors related to functional status in patients with Parkinson's disease: well-being and utilization of care (defended dissertations by Havlikova E, PhD (2008) and Dubayova T, PhD (2011))); data were collected in the period 2003-2005. The present study seeks to follow up these patients and to add new patients to the existing database. By doing so, it will bring a longitudinal character into our data, that will allow us on continuation of more reliable results from our research.
The aim of the project is to investigate which medical, psychological and social variables are related to psychological well-being and quality of life of Parkinson's disease patients.
Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients may become dependent on others in daily functioning. This requires psychosocial adaptation in relation to changes and limitations in life style. Psychological well-being is an important factor in this process and may be helpful in explaining why PD patients in the same stage of disease or in the same physical conditions behave differently in terms of perceived health and coping.
