Celebrating a significant milestone for CogniGron
Today marks a significant milestone for CogniGron and her devoted researchers and PhD students. The Ubbo Emmius Foundation has granted CogniGron once again a substantial fund enabling us to enter the next phase and continue our important work conducting research, but also move towards realising demonstrators, prototyping and collaboration with industry.
This grant is a testament to the groundbreaking, interdisciplinary research and collaboration we’ve realised in the past years. It opens up new opportunities and will strengthen our current position as an international research centre and our mission to reshape the future with our innovative, energy-efficient computer chips.
“This new funding will allow us to better support our researchers in establishing collaborations with national and international partners, both in academia and industry, accelerating the impact of brain-inspired computing in society.”
– Beatriz Noheda, Director of CogniGron.
CogniGron: international research centre on neuromorphic computing
As an interdisciplinary research centre, CogniGron has, in the past years, delivered invaluable contributions to neuromorphic computing. The CogniGron team of more than 80 researchers collaborate cross-disciplinarily daily in Groningen, the Netherlands, to develop computer chips that emulate the working principles of the brain.
Contemporary computer applications require considerable resources (data centres and supercomputers), due to the large amounts of data processing and storage that are involved, particularly for AI applications. Energy efficiency, CO2 emissions and security considerations are top priorities when developing future-proof computers, and that is precisely what CogniGron is tackling. Our team trains a new generation of scientists for the development of new computing paradigms that can drastically improve the sustainability of data processing. This involves co-design of new materials, devices, circuit, computer architectures and matching algorithms. The first CogniGron PhD students have already graduated, making CogniGron a pioneer in the field.
With the grant from the Ubbo Emmius Foundation, we can strengthen activities that demonstrate the impact that neuromorphic computing will have in our daily lives. We invite you to join our mission to develop 10,000 times more energy-efficient computer chips.
A big thank you to everyone who has worked on the proposal and to all CogniGron members!
