Advanced Materials
Advanced Materials research in Groningen is based on a long-standing collaboration between researchers from different disciplines. This collaboration, first documented in 1970, has developed throughout the years: The collaborative efforts of the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry, Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials resulted in the Zernike Institute National Research Center (1999), one of only two centers of excellence in the Netherlands. The faculty theme ‘Advanced Materials’ builds on this established cooperation and extends it into new directions. With currently 60 experimental and theoretical researchers from five research Institutes the faculty theme unites the disciplines physics, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology, pharmacy and engineering. This breadth offers great opportunities for long-term integrated approaches.
