Title: Source apportionment of atmospheric carbonaceous aerosols in Xi’an, China

By:
Haoyue Deng, MSc EES student

Summary:
Xi’an is one of the cities under most polluted air condition of the world. In order to mitigate air
pollution in Xi’an in an efficient and targeted way, it is necessary to estimate the sources that
contributing to atmospheric carbonaceous aerosols in this city.

In this project, the aerosol samples that collected on filters are extracted in Aerosol Combustion
System (ACS) and the radiocarbons ( 14 C) contained in samples are measured in Accelerator Mass
Spectrometry (AMS). The analysis of radiocarbon can provide insight of source distribution of
aerosol carbons in Xi’an, China.

The introduction of different fractions of carbon, the carbon contributions from fossil and non-
fossil sources, the pollution mitigation suggestions and new findings about a carbon fraction
‘more volatile organic carbon’ will be presented in the colloquium.

Title: Analysis and design a benchmarking system using smart meters in electrolytic tinning line12 at TataSteel packaging.

By: Andres Marchant Castelnuovo, MSc EES student

Summary:
Tata Steel Netherlands, one of the biggest steel manufacturer in Europe, who realize the necessity of a sustainability long-term strategy. Even with high efficiency standards and modern equipment installed, steel production is an energy demanding process with high waste emission. The Energy Efficiency (EE) team within the Health, Safety \& Environment (HSE) department continuously looks for means and possibilities to improve the energy efficiency and lower the CO, CO2 and NO2 emissions at the Ijmuiden site as well as other Tata Steel sites.

Smart Meter in ETL12 is a project which has been developed during these months to connect and analyze the electric footprint on the line establishing some parameters and bench-marking each produced coil. For this project was used software development techniques and Microsoft Solution Framework. However , and extensive research about energy efficiency and bench-marking was establish a prior. The results could lead the company to improve the production and save up to 25% on energy consumed on the tinning line.
