ENTEG's Technology fuels BioBTX's sustainable plastic recycling plant
Innovative technology developed by BioBTX in partnership with ENTEG has paved the way for BioBTX to secure over 80 million euros to build a new plant in Delfzijl. This facility will annually convert 20,000 tons of waste plastic into renewable raw materials for batteries, insulation, and PET bottles.
BioBTX’s integrated cascading catalytic pyrolysis (ICCP) technology, with roots in the research group of professor Erik Heeres, processes plastic at high temperatures to produce renewable aromatics like benzene, toluene, and xylene. This advancement reduces reliance on fossil fuels and lowers CO2 emissions.
"This funding is a crucial step towards a sustainable chemical industry," said Ton Vries, co-CEO of BioBTX. The financing includes contributions from Invest-NL, Infinity Recycling, Covestro, NOM/Groeifonds, Carduso Capital, Polestar Capital Circular Debt Fund, the province of Groningen, and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
The BioBTX plant is expected to be operational by 2027, marking a significant boost for the region's investment climate. BioBTX plans to expand its groundbreaking technology globally, setting a new standard in sustainable industrial practices.
