Biotech Booster Grant Awarded to Van der Maarel
Prof. Marc van der Maarel from ENTEG has been awarded a Biotech Booster grant of EUR 200,000 from the Nationaal Groeifonds Program.
Van der Maarel's project focuses on scaling up glycogen produced by Galdieria microalgae as a sustainable moisturizing ingredient in a variety of cosmetic products such as shampoo and body lotion. These acid-loving microalgae thrive in the dark on local agricultural products such as glycerol from vegetable oil or sugar from sugar beet. The project is a collaboration with Mariska van der Hoek of the startup ModAlgae B.V. Van der Maarel and Van der Hoek previously received an NWO Take-off grant to research the feasibility of the project.
