Abstract: Formation control has obtained significant attention due to its practical potential in numerous impactful applications. Despite its promise, formation control faces a lot of challenges arising from multiple systems’ constraints in real-world applications. In this thesis, the issue of formation control under multiple different constraints has been thoroughly investigated. It presents novel methods to achieve the desired formation shape using heterogeneous sensing, as well as formation control strategies that depend on specific measurements, such as range-only sensing and relative positions without orientation information. Furthermore, a generalized concept of formation control, termed dispersion formation, is introduced, extending formation control from rigid geometric structures to more flexible distributions.
