CRASIS Annual Meeting & Masterclass – “Ancient Health. Concepts, Materiality, and the Experience of Life”

On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 March, CRASIS hosts its sixth Master Class and Annual Meeting, with nine international (PhD-)students speaking in a closed setting on the first day, and seven international scholars on the second. During the events, the concept of ancient health will be explored from abstract and philosophical, as well as from more concrete archaeological perspectives, and historical and literary angles too will be examined. We hope to offer a broad spectrum of contributions spanning various disciplines of the rich field of Antiquity studies.

This year, we are glad to welcome Ralph Rosen , Vartan Gregorian Professor of the Humanities and Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, as our keynote speaker, who will give the following lecture:

“Self-Determination and Agency in Hippocratic Concepts of Health”

The CRASIS Annual Meeting & Masterclass is a two-day event, set up as an informal meeting place for students at PhD or Research Master level, postdocs and senior staff to promote the discussion and exchange of ideas beyond disciplinary boundaries. On the day before the conference, we host the Master Class for Research Master and PhD students, which is also presided by Prof. Rosen as Master. This event is not open to the public, but you can take a look at the programme of this day.

Students can earn 1 ECTS

Students of the research schools OIKOS and ARCHON can also earn 1 ECTS by attending the Annual Meeting on March 3rd and by writing a short report on it (1000-1500 words). In the report, all lectures should be reflected upon in relation to the theme of the conference as stated in the call for papers .

If you wish to earn 1 ECTS in this way, please say so in your e-mail. The report can be handed in through crasis.aws@rug.nl , after which we will inform the research school.

Practicalities & Registration

The Annual Meeting on March 3rd is open to the public and takes place in the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (Oude Boteringestraat 38) and in the close by located Heymanszaal of the Academy building (Broerstraat 5). The venue is easily reached on foot (ca. 20 minutes) or by bus (bus stop at Grote Markt or Oude Ebbingestraat) from the Groningen central railway station.

Registration is required to attend the conference, and can be done before the end of February 24th by sending an e-mail . Please state your name, affiliation, and whether you are a (PhD-)student or not. The fee(s) can be paid in cash (preferably exact) upon arrival on the conference day.

The attendance fee includes coffee, tea and refreshments throughout the day, as well as lunch and the wine reception. If you wish to attend the conference (buffet) dinner afterwards, we ask an extra contribution. Attending only the keynote lecture is free of charge and registration is not required.
