Hellenism: Interaction, Translation and Culture Transfer

The conference hosts eight international speakers and is dedicated to the exploration of the complex cultural concepts involved in our current understanding of Hellenism. The ancient Mediterranean, in some ways like the modern world, became a fairly small place after Alexander’s conquests and into the Roman period. In contrast to previous scholarly analyses, highlighting tensions between indigenous and globalizing cultures, we propose a more nuanced and complex set of interactions.

The aim of this conference is to assess the critical questions which arise from this nuanced picture of Hellenism, focusing in particular on the aspects of translation, material culture, identity, literature and theory. We hope to offer a broad spectrum of contributions spanning various disciplines of the rich field of Antiquity studies.

This year, we are glad to welcome Dr. Benjamin Wright (Lehigh University, PA) as our Keynote speaker, who will give the following lecture:

“Greek Paideia and the Jewish Community of Alexandria in the Letter of Aristeas”

he CRASIS Annual Meeting & Masterclass is a two-day event, set up as an informal meeting place for students at PhD or Research Master level, postdocs and senior staff to promote the discussion and exchange of ideas beyond disciplinary boundaries. On the day before the conference, we host the Master Class for Research Master and PhD students, which is also presided by Dr. Wright as Master. This event is not open to the public, but you can take a look at the programme of this day.

Students can earn 1 ECTS

Students of the OIKOS, ARCHON and NOSTER research schools can also earn 1 ECTS by attending the Annual Meeting on February 12^th and writing a short report on it (1000-1500 words). In the report, all lectures should be reflected upon in relation to the theme of the conference as stated in the call for papers .

If you wish to earn 1 ECTS in this way, you can include this information in the ‘Comments’ field in the registration form. The report can be handed in through crasis.aws rug.nl , after which we will inform the research school.

Practicalities & Registration

The Annual Meeting on February 12^th is open to the public and takes place in the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (Oude Boteringestraat 38). All lectures are held in the Courtroom, a monumental room that directly adjoins the main hall of the building. The venue is easily reached on foot (ca. 20 minutes) or by bus (bus stop at Grote Markt or Oude Ebbingestraat) from the Groningen central railway station.

Registration is required to attend the conference, and can be done before the end of February 4^th through our registration form . The attendance fee includes coffee, tea and refreshments throughout the day, as well as lunch and the wine reception. If you wish to attend the conference (buffet) dinner afterwards, we ask an extra contribution. Attending only the keynote lecture is free of charge, but please do register for this beforehand.
