Varieties of re-enchantment: nature and spirituality in contemporary societies

Presented by Dr. Brenda Matthijssen, University of Groningen

Resting in nature: exploring connections at Dutch natural burial grounds

The presentation shares insights from a four-year study (2021–2025) on nature burial in the Netherlands. These burials occur in unmarked graves within natural environments and aim to satisfy funerary needs while promoting sustainability. The talk explores how both providers and participants perceive and relate to nature, and it includes a reflection on the project’s methodological approach to relationality in this context.
