National Populism, Religion, and Environment: The Ambivalent Case of the Romanian Far-Right

The talk addresses ongoing debates on whether nationalist populism in Europe promotes secularization by “hijacking religion” or rather sacralizes politics. Focusing on the under-researched case of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), it explores how AUR’s religious stance both de-secularizes and secularizes: defending Orthodoxy as "strong religion" while aligning with a secularizing national capitalism. The presentation reflects on the ambivalent environmentalist outcomes of this interplay and concludes with a theoretical discussion on secularizing/de-secularizing tensions within national populism and their impact on environmental concerns.
