Procedures measurement biogenic carbon fraction in liquid samples using 14C-AMS
As of September 1, 2021, the 14C laboratory of the Center for Isotope Research (CIO) will no longer perform 14C analyzes to determine the proportion of biogenic carbon in volatile liquid samples for specific (batch) control purposes.
We will continue to offer the following service for liquid samples:
-
Giving advice on the 14C methodology to be used for determining the proportion of biogenic carbon.
-
In consultation and provided there is sufficient capacity: Carrying out a limited number of 14C-AMS measurements for the purpose of verifying the measurements made with an LSC method (testing comparability 14C methods).
-
In consultation and provided there is sufficient capacity: Carrying out a limited number of 14C-AMS measurements for experimental research (eg testing the composition of a fuel in a new production method).
The reason for this is that our lab process is not designed to analyze large numbers of volatile liquid samples. Our standard delivery time for these types of samples is 8-12 weeks (not guaranteed, and may take longer if many samples have been submitted). And although we work according to fixed procedures and with quality assurance, the bioC determination using 14C measurements is not an accredited ISO-17025 procedure at CIO. The RUG/CIO lab is not accredited.
The CIO lab, an academic 14C lab for more than 70 years, mainly focuses on performing 14C analyzes for scientific and experimental research and on improving the 14C methodology for various applications.
