Title: Interactive and Pixel-Accurate Rendering of Locally Refined (LR-)Splines and Isogeometric Volumes
Abstract:
In this talk we present approaches for interactive rendering of locally refined (LR-)splines (bi- and tri-variate), as well as isogeometric volumes. The common theme is to ensure correct, i.e., pixel-accurate, geometry, water-tight surface tessellation, and efficient algorithms suitable for real-time rendering. In the case of LR-splines, we present a multi-stage algorithm that decouples the tessellator and the patch geometry. The implementation using OpenGL utilizes compute shaders and hardware tessellation functionality. We showcase interactive rendering achieved by our approach on three representative use cases. In the case of isogeometric volumes, the entire OpenGL pipeline is used in a multi-stage algorithm leveraging techniques from surface rendering, order-independent transparency, as well as theory and numerical methods for ordinary differential equations. We showcase the efficiency of our approach on different models relevant to industry, ranging from quality inspection of the parametrization of the geometry, to stress analysis in linear elasticity, to visualization of computational fluid dynamics results.
Biography:
Franz G. Fuchs received his master's degree in mathematics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2006 with a thesis on image processing. In 2009 he received his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Oslo (CMA), working on mathematical theory and numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws. His additional research interests include efficient numerical algorithms on parallel architectures for visualization and computation. His is currently a research scientist in the Mathematics and Cybernetics department of SINTEF Oslo, Norway.
