Title: Reuse in Architectural Decision-Making

           

Abstract:

As in other engineering disciplines, software engineers try to reuse during system development: from abstract elements such as design strategies, tactics and design patterns to concrete building blocks like third-party components and class libraries. Since these things represent accumulated knowledge, their reuse in software development projects lead to increased quality, efficiency and to reduced risks. Recent research efforts towards reuse provided important support for decision-making i.e. for software architectures. However, technology-related decisions and acquisition and evolution of knowledge have not yet been investigated sufficiently. Firstly, architectural decisions on products and technologies – such as frameworks, middleware and tools – require more support by methods and tools. Secondly, successful reuse requires a critical mass of reusable items to be provided as a starter set – sometimes considered as upfront effort. Thirdly, the exchange of experience and knowledge between architects demands for more support. Successful ways of interaction such as direct peer discussions between architects and online discussions on blogs and forums in the internet represent a valuable source for knowledge to be utilized for decision-making. The talk discusses current research activities of the author’s research group at the Hamburg University to solve these issues. This research covers both the development of design methods and of tool support.
