Public Academy lecture 'Animal rights and their owners' duties' 16 November 2023
When: | Th 16-11-2023 19:00 - 21:00 |
Where: | Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen |
What rights do sheep in a pasture or cows in a barn have? And what happens to dogs, cats and iguanas that the justice system confiscates?
At the Public Academy for Jurisprudence on 16 November, we will discuss animals' rights and their owners' duties. We will look at animals through the legal lens. Earlier this year, the House of Representatives agreed to a bill to punish animal abuse and neglect more severely. The maximum penalty for killing cats, organizing cockfights or letting a dog die, for example, will be increased to five years in prison.
District Attorney Sus Broekstra worked for a time at the Office of the Public Prosecutor, which brings cases to court on large-scale animal cruelty, among other things. With appealing examples, she will take you through cases from her practice. What does she think of the increased penalties for animal abuse?
Criminal Judge Fred Janssens dealt with many cases involving animals. What did he see? How did he rule and why? What are the backgrounds of people who ended up in court for treating animals badly?
The evening will be led by Leonie Sinnema, reporter for Dagblad van het Noorden. After the lectures there will be room for questions. However, please keep questions general. During the Public Academy there is no room to address personal issues.
