Research shows that treated TBS patients are much less likely to commit crimes again than offenders who have only served a prison sentence. However, in the media we mainly read reports about escaped TBS patients and TBS patients on leave who still commit a crime. What exactly does that mean? When is someone sentenced to TBS? These and more questions are central during the Public Academy for Jurisprudence.
Michiel van der Wolf, associate professor of criminal law at the University of Groningen and professor of forensic psychiatry at Leiden University, will discuss the social and behavioral side of TBS: what it entails, how it works, when it does not work and also: how does TBS exist in society?
Marcel Wolters is a criminal judge at the Northern Netherlands District Court and has often handled cases in which TBS was imposed. He also regularly issues judgments in so-called TBS extension cases. He is also chairman of the Supervisory Committee of Dr. S. Van Mesdag clinic. He talks about the options that judges have to impose TBS and how they reach their decision.

The Public Academy for Jurisprudence
Through lectures aimed at the general public, the Publieksacademie voor de Rechtspraak (Public Academy for Jurisprudence) seeks to satisfy this immense interest. Judges, public prosecutors, professors and other experts discuss legal topics that affect many people. The lectures are suitable for a wide audience and do not require knowledge of the law.
The Public Academy is a collaboration between the Court of the Northern Netherlands, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen, the Northern Netherlands Public Prosecution Service and the Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper.
