For years we have been confronted with the abhorrent practice of human trafficking. This often concerns vulnerable girls and women who, thanks to the work of the teenage pimp (or the lover boy), end up in prostitution against their will. Does the working method of these so-called loverboys have to do with blackmail and manipulation? What can be done about this?

During the Public Academy for Jurisprudence on Thursday 28 September 2017, Kai Lindenberg, associate professor of criminal (procedural) law at the University of Groningen, will look at the problem from a scientific perspective. Although combating loverboy practices and human trafficking is high on the agenda of both politicians and the judiciary (police, Public Prosecution Service, judiciary), it is not yet easy. What makes this so complicated?

Jantine Nolta, judge at the District Court of Northern Netherlands, talks about her experiences as a judge in these cases. For example, how do you deal with the often manipulative character of the loverboys/human traffickers during a hearing? And what do you do when you deal with scared, impressionable and naive victims? She also uses examples to talk about the consequences of human trafficking, for both perpetrators and victims.
