Sustainability at the UG

Sustainability is one of the core values of the University of Groningen. This means that the UG wants to integrate sustainable development into all facets of the university (education, research and operations).

The ambitions and goals in the field of sustainability at the RUG have been formulated in the Sustainability Roadmap.

Sustainable measures in the Röling Building

The Faculty of Law has the same ambitions and goals regarding sustainability as the rest of the RUG. Various measures have been taken to make (daily life in) the Röling Building as sustainable as possible:

The exterior of the building

• The building is equipped with solar panels and solar control glass
• The heating is regulated by means of heat pumps and WKO (thermal energy storage system), which we use together with the UB
• Thanks to digital key management (with card readers and badges), the management burden and costs for physical keys are minimal
  

Ventilation and heating

• All rooms have balanced ventilation connected to central, energy-efficient air handling units (heat recovery system)
• The lecture halls are equipped with a CO2-based volume control that adjusts the ventilation capacity precisely to the number of people in the room
• The heating system is set to a maximum temperature of 19 degrees; from 26 degrees cooling is provided
• Most doors open and close automatically; this ensures that the doors adjacent to the bicycle cellar and the entrances in particular prevent cold and heat loss as much as possible
  

Furniture

• Many of the computers and monitors were moved with us from the Harmony complex
• Most of the furniture is made from recycled materials (such as PET bottles). In addition, it was decided not to throw away a number of chairs from the Harmony complex, but to reupholster them and move them along
• The (LED) lighting is fitted with movement sensors and only comes on when someone is actually present
• The taps at the toilets do not give unlimited water, but only for a fixed number of seconds
• The toilets are equipped with towel dispensers
  

Food, drinks and waste

• Most of the food on offer in the canteen is vegetarian
• Coffee is purchased in a socially responsible manner (CSR certified, as are all purchasing contracts) and comes from a sustainable supplier
• Coffee can only be drunk from reusable cups or mugs
• Waste is separated into four categories (paper, plastic, green waste and residual waste) and processed as sustainably as possible
