Roman-Groningen law
The research, funded by the Gratama Foundation and conducted by Jelle Jansen, focuses on the civil jurisdiction of the Chieftain's Chamber in the eighteenth century. At the time, the Chieftain's Chamber was the highest court in Town and Country. Primary law was customary law and Roman law applied when this did not provide a solution. Jurisprudence research shows, for example, in which areas of law in the region of Groningen Roman law was recipitated, what the relationship was between customary law and Roman law, and by which writers and rulings on Roman law the Groningen judges were guided.
