Students in our Global Criminal Law LLM programme recently participated in an excursion to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, as part of the programme course International Criminal Tribunals and Courts. The excursion was led by PhD Researcher and Lecturer Bereket Messele.

Students were able to visit the pre-trial and trial chambers (and other places) within the court, and were also provided with a lecture about the history of the ICC, how it works, jurisdictional issues and challenges it is involved with, as well as current developments within the court.

As the International Criminal Tribunals and Courts course deals with both substantive and procedural aspects of international criminal law, the ICC is an excellent place to visit, as it deals with the prosecution and trial of persons charged with various international crimes, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and crimes of aggression.

In addition to the ICC, the course also provides students valuable knowledge and understanding of the law and practice of other international Criminal Tribunals and Courts, such as the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). The course also adopts a critical approach to assess the role and effectiveness of these criminal law institutions in an international legal environment torn between globalization and fragmentation.
