A unique feature of the Governance and Law in Digital Society programme is that students have the opportunity to follow an internship in the second half of the academic year. This gives students the chance to gain practical experience in the field of digitalization by way of work experience and research in the field. Students of the programme are legally trained policy advisers and  understand the challenges and opportunities of a digitalizing society. The internship gives them a chance to use their skills and knowledge in the area of digitalization to critically examine the functioning of law and public administration. Below are 6 places where previous students interned, with a brief explanation regarding what the organizations do:

Agentschap Telecom

We constantly rely on telecommunications networks; we call our parents, message our friends, shop online, and watch television. Agentschap Telecom ensures that this is possible by ensuring that television, radio, mobile networks, and internet are always available within the Netherlands and can be used safely. They ensure the availability, reliability and safety of all telecommunications and IT-networks. They help to answer some of the pesky and necessary questions you may have such as why you don’t have signal in certain places, or if it safe to transfer money on specific websites. Currently Agentschap Telecom is focusing on very relevant topics such as the implementation of 5G networks, artificial intelligence, digital resilience, and space travel.

Dutch National Police – Real Time Intelligence Center

The RTIC works in small teams to create accessible applications surrounding big data to be used by the police. Central to their approach is openness, transparency and measurability. One of their creations is the Incident Response Platform which combines information from open sources such as Twitter, Facebook, and police systems to provide police with the most actual and relevant information related to an incident report.

Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs

DUO is an organization that almost every Dutch student knows as this is where they get their student financing from. However, DUO does much more than just giving out student loans, they also help fund educational institutions, manage the register of diplomas, and organize school, state, and naturalization exams. DUO is a product of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science as well as the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment.

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)

The IND assesses any and all applications from foreign nationals that are looking to live in the Netherlands or become a Dutch citizen. Applications can be from refugees that are not safe in their home courtiers, migrants with specialized knowledge looking to work in the Netherlands, students looking to get an education in the Netherlands, or foreign nationals looking to start a family with someone living in the Netherlands. The IND is tasked with assessing such applications against the Dutch policy on foreign nationals. Such an assessment involves listening to each applicant’s story and making a decision that accounts for each applicant’s personal situation.
