Pepijn Tukker, Tim van Zuijlen and Zoé Christoff awarded Stimulation Fund grant for multidisciplinary AI research

Pepijn Tukker and Tim van Zuijlen , both working in the IT Law section of our faculty, have been awarded a grant of 6,000 euros from the Interdisciplinary Projects Incentive Fund. They obtained the grant for a multidisciplinary AI research project for which they will collaborate with Zoé Christoff , assistant professor of Cognitive Artificial Intelligence at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
High-risk AI systems curbed
The new AI regulation sets requirements for human oversight and transparency of high-risk AI systems. It has yet to become clear to users and developers of those systems what the requirements mean. It must also become clear to lawyers what the requirements mean for the design of AI systems. This requires multidisciplinary research that involves both AI experts and legal experts.
Transparency, human oversight and AI
The multidisciplinary research that Tukker, Van Zuijlen and Christoff will work on is titled ‘Sharing perspectives: legal requirements and technological reality in human oversight of AI systems’. The goal is to arrive at the right questions. What do technical experts want to know from legal experts and vice versa? By exploring that, questions and topics can be prioritized, and the interdisciplinary impact of both technical and legal research on AI is increased.
The collaboration between Tukker, Van Zuijlen and Christoff will begin at the end of this year. The funding obtained will be used to organize a high-level expert meeting with AI experts and legal experts, disseminate the research results and fund support by student assistants from both faculties.
The researchers hope this project leads to a more intensive collaboration between the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
