Dr. Evgeni Moyakine , Assistant Professor at the Section IT Law of the Department of Transboundary Legal Studies of the Faculty of Law, has been awarded the grant of the Incentive Fund for Interdisciplinary Projects together with two colleagues from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Prof. Dr Antonis Vakis and Dr Fadi Mohsen.

The Netherlands aspires to derive all its energy from sustainable sources by 2050: around 2030, offshore wind farms will be supplying 75% of current electricity consumption. These wind farms often rely on the use of the so-called ‘digital twins’ or digital replicas of physical or digital objects or systems that are deployed to predict operations of wind turbines, reduce risks and minimise costs. These digital twins are susceptible to cyber threats that regularly go unnoticed and blend in with routine system irregularities.

The (research) project ‘WindCyber: Advancing Cybersecurity for Offshore Wind Farm Digital Twins through Comprehensive Collaboration’ financed by the fund is supported by both the Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology and AI and the Wubbo Ockels School for Energy and Climate and deals with the topic that is according to the Academic Director of the Jantina Tammes School prof. dr. Ming Cao ‘really of top priority’. The project aims to bring together experts in the field of sustainable energy solutions and cybersecurity and will result in a joint publication by three engaged researchers about the deployment of cybersecurity tools in digital twins of offshore wind farms.

In addition, an interactive workshop will be organised for not only specialists from the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and other faculties of the UG but also all interested students and professionals of external organisations. The project’s primary objectives include facilitating community forming between researchers in this dynamic and complex area and fostering interdisciplinary research collaboration between them.
