Prof. Ramses Wessel

The Executive Board has appointed prof. Ramses Wessel as of January 1 as vice-dean of the Faculty of Law. The Faculty Board is very pleased with the appointment and looks forward to cooperating with the new vice-dean. Wessel succeeds prof. Jan Jans, who, after a period of six years as vice-dean, will continue his commitment to the Faculty as Professor of Administrative Law.

Wessel has been working at our faculty as professor of European Law since January 1, 2020. Before that he worked as Program Director, Dean of the Faculty of Management & Governance and Dean of Educational Innovation at the University of Twente. He also held visiting professorships at Leiden University, Sapienza Università di Roma, Luiss Guido Carli Roma, and the Universidad Pablo d'Olavide in Sevilla. Wessel holds an LLM in International and European Law from our university and a PhD in Law from Utrecht University, where he also taught for several years.

As professor of European Law, Wessel specialises in European Law, with a focus on the interface between EU law and international and domestic law, EU External Relations Law, and the Law of International Organizations.

Wessel: ‘I am very honored to be able to use my experience relatively soon after my appointment at the Faculty to further improve our research policy. Last year I was reminded again of what a wonderful Faculty this is. One of my intentions is to see how we can make the great research that we are doing even more visible regionally, nationally and internationally.’
