Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship awarded to Catherine Jasserand-Breeman
Catherine Jasserand, who has been working on biometric-related topics at STeP, the Security, Technology and e-Privacy Research Group at the Faculty of Law, will join KU Leuven this fall to conduct research on the use of facial recognition in public spaces under the supervision of Dr Els Kindt. Her project ‘DATAFACE’ (Close Up: Your I.D is Your Face) will investigate country trends in the use of facial recognition technologies in public spaces and assess the threats and risks that various uses pose to the rights to privacy and data protection as defined at the EU level. Part of the research will be carried out in collaboration with computer scientists from NTNU (Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology) where Catherine Jasserand will do a secondment.
Catherine Jasserand defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘Reprocessing of Biometric Data for Law Enforcement Purposes: Individuals’ Safeguards Caught at the Interface between the GDPR and the ‘Police’ Directive?’ in July 2019 analysing the new EU data protection framework (the GDPR and the ‘police’ Directive) in the context of law enforcement re-use of biometric data originally collected under the GDPR.
