Groningen 9th in European Human Rights Moot Court Competition 2015/2016

15 March 2016

The University of Groningen participated in the 4th European Human Rights Moot Court Competition (EHRMCC). The team was coached by Dr. Panos Merkouris, Dr. Antenor Hallo de Wolf and assisted by Ms. Lucia Berro Pizzarossa. The team consisted of Mr. Werner Hofs, Ms. Kim Roeten, Ms. Claire Ochieng and Ms. Iris Kwakkel. This competition required submission of written memorials both for the applicant and the respondent, and only the 16 best teams qualified for the final oral rounds in Strasbourg. 79 teams were registered for the competition, and the University of Groningen’s written submissions were ranked 5th. This secured for the first time the participation of the team in the Final Rounds of the competition.

In the Final’s oral rounds, the University of Groningen team was finally ranked in the 9th place, only missing qualification to the quarter-finals by a mere 0,17 points (out of a total of 40). The Respondent side of the team was ranked 3rd in the preliminary rounds. Mr. Werner Hofs was the 5th best oralist for the Respondent and Ms. Kim Roeten was the 7th best oralist for the Respondent for the preliminary rounds (out of a total of 32).

In summation the University of Groningen did exceptionally well for a first-time appearance. This has set the foundation for future successful participations and has also raised the visibility and fame of the University in the field of human rights.
