Dr Paul Geerts has been appointed professor by special appointment in Intellectual Property Law at the Faculty of Law, via the Intellectual Property Foundation Groningen, as of 1 December 2014. He succeeds Prof. Ch. Gielen, who was professor by special appointment Intellectual Property Law since 1992.

Dr Geerts’ research focuses on the classic intellectual property law and, broader, the unfair competition law, for example unfair commercial practices and misleading and unlawful comparative advertising. The intellectual property law is an area of law which is increasingly relevant to society. One of the main causes is the increasing European harmonisation of intellectual property law, because of which European Union case law has been playing a more central role and recognition of foreign jurisdiction becomes more and more relevant.

In his publications, Dr Geerts focuses on all aspects of intellectual property law, like copyright, design right, portrait right, trade mark law, slavish imitation, unfair commercial practices, and misleading and comparative advertising.

Dr Geerts already works as lecturer within the department of Business and Labour Law of the University of Groningen. Besides that he is also a Deputy Judge, and self-employed legal advisor.
