India Open House: Secularism and Rise of Majoritarianism in India

When:We 22-01-2020 15:00 - 17:00
Where:Room 1312.0012 Harmonie Building

India Open House organized by Dr. Ritumbra Manuvie and moderated by Professor MMTA Brus.

As you may be aware, the Government of India has recently passed a controversial legislation which at one end of the spectrum is being lauded as the 'refugee policy' and on the other end of the spectrum is seen as a discriminatory ‘re-engineering of 'Indian Citizenship’ on religious grounds. It is feared that the Act, along with the existing process of Citizenship Determination in India will unnecessary burden poor and marginalized sections of the society, especially Women, Dalits, tribes and religious minorities.

To challenge this law the Muslim women of Shaheen Bhag in New Delhi, have come forward as a beacon of protest and solidarity movement across India. This coming together of women against organized political forces resonates with the growth of feminist social movements across the world!

At the same time the use of brute state force by the ruling government towards the Student protestors in an attempt to silence dissent also resonates with the rise of violence and majoritarian politics across the world.

According to a recent New York University report, India currently has the 3rd largest attack against students globally, after Turkey and China. See Masked Men Attack Students in Rampage at University in New Delhi and Felle protesten in India na overval knokploegen op elite-universiteit (Dutch).

In light of the events as they unfold in India, we want to create an open space in Universities across the Netherlands for debates, discussions, education, and resistance!

2nd Indian Open House will take effect on Wednesday 22nd of January from 15:00 to 17:00 hrs at 1312.0012 (Harmonie Building). The meeting will allow us to openly reflect upon the nature of Secularism and the Growth of Majoritarianism in India.

For questions regarding the Groningen event you can reach out to Dr. Manuvie at r.manuvie rug.nl or to Alka Rao at a.rao rug.nl

NOTE: There will be parallel discourse in UvA/VU at the same day and time.
